Beach Cruisers: Guide to Your Spring- Summer Tune Up

« Back to Blog

As the weather starts to warm up, you may be ready to get your beach cruiser out of storage and enjoy a sunny afternoon. Unfortunately, after a long winter’s hibernation, your bicycle may need a little bit of routine maintenance to get it back in peak beach cruising condition. So, before the season heads into full swing, stop by Shore Brake Cyclery and let one of our mechanics get your bike back in tip-top condition.

Not sure what a Spring or Summer tune-up involves? Let us explain!

Lube Brake and Derailleur Cables

When your bike sits in storage all winter, the salty air can work its way into the parts of your bike. You can end up with rust forming on your cables. Part of your tune-up will be an inspection of your brakes and derailleur cables. The mechanic will make sure that everything is in good working order and free of rust. If anything needs a little lube, it will be applied, and the mechanic will advise you if anything needs to be replaced.

Brake and Derailleur Adjustment

When looking at the cables, the mechanic will do a thorough check to make sure that your bike is shifting as smooth as butter. Also, he or she will inspect the braking mechanisms to ensure that your bicycle stops every time you squeeze your brakes. If anything isn’t working as it should, the mechanic will make the necessary adjustment.

Basic Wheel True

A long rest in storage can throw your bike’s wheels out of alignment which is why a basic wheel true is part of the basic tune-up package. The mechanic will make sure everything is straight and true like it should be. He or she will also take a look at your tires, checking for holes, cracks, or dry rot. Harsh conditions can sometimes leave tires a little worse for wear. After you tune-up, you can rest assured that your wheels and tires will get you where you want to go.

Clean and Lube Chain

A bike that is just sitting in a garage or storage unit can accumulate a lot of dirt and dust. The mechanic working on your bicycle will give your chain a good cleaning and wash off all the cobwebs and other junk that has attached itself. He or she will then lube the chain, so it is back in good condition. If your bike’s condition is really bad, you may need to upgrade to The Overhaul. It includes everything in the Basic Tune Up as well as a few more intensive measures.

Resurface Brake Pads

Road grime or oils can contaminate the pads which will prevent your brakes from working their best. If you are need of a brake pad resurfacing, you will probably hear your brakes making a loud squealing noise. The resurfacing process will remove any glazing and make sure that your brakes work when you need them to.

Cleaning all the Spinning Parts

The mechanic will disassemble and clean all the spinning parts of your bike like the bottom bracket, headset, and hubs. These parts can become full of road grime just like your brakes, and they could start squeaking, squealing, or even grinding. If left unchecked, this could cause permanent damage to the parts.

Replacement of Brake and Shift Cables

In the basic tune-up, the mechanic checked all of your brake and shifter cables to make sure everything was in good order. If they aren’t, these parts will be replaced in The Overhaul. The standard parts to do this are included in the Overhaul fee.

Polish Bicycle

Finally, after everything is in tip-top shape, the mechanic will give your bike a polish. This will have it looking its best so you can show it off while cruising the beach.

As you can see, there is a lot that goes into keeping a bicycle well maintained year after year, and most people do not have the time or the tools to do this themselves. That isn’t anything to worry about, however, our bike mechanics love the chance to tune up and overhaul a bike! In fact, it is one of their favorite parts of the job.
